This Amazing Minimalist Modern House Is Inside a Giant Ancient Rock

Architectural designer and photographer Amey Kandalgaonkar, based in Shanghai, imagined a home integrated with a giant rock, a modern vision of Mada’in Saleh, the ancient rock tombs in Saudi Arabia.

Kandalgoankar first step was to create a 3D render of the rock, a time consuming process, after which he and once satisfied started fixing the minimalist house into the side and top of the rock, fitting it together like a puzzle. While at ground level the home is pure minimalist, the aerial view reveals a complex and multifaceted design.

“Considering the visual complexity of the rocks at Mada’in Saleh, it was imperative to use simple planes and cubes in order to achieve a visual balance,” Kandalgoankar explains. “I started out creating the rock in 3D software which in itself was a sculpting process. Later when inserting the house into this rock, I tried to keep its visual impact from eye level as minimum as possible and only when observed from a birds eye, the real extent of the intervention is revealed.”

The contrast of the textured rock and the smooth concrete creates perfect harmony between the old and the new – perhaps we’ll see this amazing concept in real life in the future.
